The analysis of trace metals in clinical samples like blood and serum is common routine and an integral part of patient diagnosis, pathology, and clinical research. This includes levels of essential minerals, biomarkers and toxic metals. Currently, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is the most popular analytical method due to its ultratrace measurement sensitivity for all relevant elements and high sample throughput.

The practical bottleneck that limits a laboratory’s sample throughput is the sample preparation procedure, which involves homogenization, dilutions, and reagent additions.
